In 1993 the Volunteer Lawyers Project called asking me to handle securing tax exemption for a couple selling their home in the suburbs to buy an old church in South Buffalo. When I met with Gary and Linda, all I could think of was the bible story in Matthew 19:21, where Jesus says, ‘Sell all you have, give to the poor and follow me.' I never personally knew anyone who had answered the call so literally. I was honored when Gary and Linda asked me to be on the Board and to assist them with legal matters." "What is it like five years later? The history of Christianity is full of individuals who have been punished for what they believe in. What you read less about is the kind of challenges Gary and Linda have faced: neighbors who assumed the worst and were afraid of the unknown, using their political influences to bring citation after citation after citation to a couple who put it all on the line to turn a decaying building back into God's house. That Harvest House wins city awards for beautiful landscaping is concrete evidence of physical revival of the property; the full schedule of retreats, meetings, and religious services and the demands of the baby ministry prove that Harvest House fills a big, big need in Buffalo.
